Foundation Options
A secure and level base is required for the assembly of all sizes of structures. The simplest method is to use patio stones to support the wooden floor as shown in the drawing below.
A floor kit is available separately for every kit.
Alternatively, concrete footings or superspikes may be used. If you plan to mount the structure on a concrete slab, a floor is not required.
1. Patio Stone Foundation (floor required)
In most instances patio stones may be used as a foundation. The stones are typically positioned so that the 2 x 6 pressure treated runners will sit on top of them. Once the stones are positioned, the floor is placed on top of them and leveled with shims or blocks. In situations where the ground slopes, super spikes (available at any building supply store) may be used where required.
Note: A third floor runner positioned in the middle is added on floors with a depth greater than 8'.
2. Concrete Pad
This type of foundation is recommended if the shed is to be used to house a gas pool heater, which can not sit directly on a wood floor. In this case the walls are mounted directly to the concrete. A cedar strip is attached to the bottom of the wall plate so that the spruce framing is not exposed to moisture on the concrete. The size of the pad should at least be equivalent to the outside measurement of the shed.
Note: In some jurisdictions a pool heater may be positioned on a wood floor provided it is placed on a noncombustible material which is elevated a minimum of 4" from the floor.
3. Footings
In situations where the shed is to be raised, or a building permit is required (i.e. the area of the cabana exceeds 100 sq.ft.), it may be advisable to install sono tube footings. The footings should be 10" in diameter and drilled well below frost level. They should be positioned similarly to the patio stones in Figure 1.
Note: In some situations it may be necessary to use beams in lieu of runners to comply with regional building codes.
